Research Paper: Hacking Techniques

Due Monday by 11:59pm Points 20 Submitting a text entry box or a file upload Available until Dec 13 at 11:59pm
You will need to write a 3-5 page research paper on one of the following topics:

Password cracking
Cross-Site Scripting (XSS)
Buffer Overflows
Denial of Service Attacks
Ransomware
Note: if you pick Ransomware, you need to focus on recent attacks that target whole organizations, not the (mostly older) ransomware that targeted individuals.

For this assignment, select your topic and provide links or citations to three resources that you intend to use to write your paper. For reach references, write one or two sentences describing what type of reference it is, where it is from, and what the topic of the reference is.

Appropriate description: “This is an article on Microsoft’s Technet website that describes what SQL injection attacks are and how to prevent them using C# and .Net.”

Not an appropriate description: “This is about SQL injection” or “This is a blog posting.”

These references may be from academic journals, technical publications, magazines, or news sources. Blog postings may also be okay but you should vet your sources carefully. Is the blog associated with an established security or technology company? Is the author clearly identified? Is the author someone we should consider to be reliable? The best information about hacking is frequently not an academic publication, but it would be much smarter to rely on a blog posting by a penetration tester with a known security firm than a YouTube video posted by UltraLazr

Wikipedia is not appropriate as one of your three references for this assignment.

Your next assignment will be to write your research paper. You do not need to write the paper now.
