Assessment 1 structure guidance: How to complete your project proposal
Firstly, you need to choose an organisation that you would like to work on. Develop a title, using
the knowledge gathered from the module and the weekly tasks. You might decide to do a case
study. The case studies will really help you to apply your knowledge to your chosen organisation
in the assessment.
If you are working on a case study, you might choose something similar to the following:
• An analysis of Nike’s CSR strategy
• An analysis of Walmart’s business strategy
• British Airways: An analysis of the airline’s post pandemic growth strategy.
• An analysis of strategy formulation and implementation at Apple
The potential list is endless, it depends on what you want to focus on.
For the other foci covered in the brief you might choose something like the:
Compare theory and practice:
• Is Porter’s five forces model enough in assessing the external business environment
for strategy development at Amazon?
A recovery plan:
Has poor strategy been instrumental in the financial losses suffered by the organization,
example: Develop a strategic plan for recovery.
• For this particular focus you would suggest a new strategy and discuss how you would
overcome issues in the future etc.
A risk management strategy:
A risk management strategy for Café Rouge restaurants in post pandemic Britain.
• Again, for this you would suggest a risk management strategy for the restaurant.
Remember you do not need to know everything about these concepts at the moment, you
are just proposing a project that you will develop in your final assignment. It is better to
choose something that you are interested in so that you will enjoy the process.
The project proposal
When you have chosen a title and an area of strategy that you want to work on, you can proceed
to develop your proposal using the guideline provided. An examples is provided below;

The guidelines
You should provide an outline/introduction to your chosen organisation and explain its role
and purpose.
• Give an introduction to your chosen
organization.
You should discuss how and why your organisation fits into this module (think back to your
case studies and acknowledge your chosen organisation’s strategy)
• Why does this organisation fit into the module? Every organisation has a strategy and
you need to acknowledge the importance of strategy to all businesses and explain
what your organisation’s strategy is.
For examples, in the case of the chosen
example; what is the strategy of Walmart.
• Lead on price
• Invest to Differentiate on Access
• Be Competitive on Assortment
• Deliver a Great Experience
• Money-back Guarantee
• Provide a set of aims and objectives for your final project report and discuss how you
will you undertake the research for your final project. i.e. you might think about your
proposed strategy for your chosen organisation and how are you going to achieve this.
What are your key aims for your final assignment? What do you want to find out about your
organisation’s business strategy specifically and how will you achieve this?
• You might want to look at any case-studies from your core text, how the
strategies are implemented, for example, whether it has been successful (these
would be your aims).
• Therefore, your objectives would be measurable outputs that you can carry out to
achieve your aims. You might want to discuss where you will focus your research, what
sources you will use. You should also find relevant literature to research on your
chosen organization, if has been successful, why, if not, why? If it hasn’t been
successful, this is where you might suggest a new strategy in your second assignment.
Of course, this is primarily depended on the aspect of the business strategy that you
would like to focus on.
• You should also outline concepts and models that you will apply in your final report
that must be drawn from the module content and core reading text. i.e. the three
horizons, PESTLE, SWOT etc. It is also useful to acknowledge why you have chosen
those models. You should select models and theories that are relevant to your
organization.
This is where you will bring in your theories and models covered in the module that you
will use in your analysis. For example, if you are assessing strategy formulation you might
discuss the outside in or inside out theory. You might also think about the strategy lenses
three horizons etc. You will of course use these in your second assignment to fully analyse
your organisation’s strategy. Make sure that these are relevant to what you would like to
find out.
Don’t forget to end your work with a conclusion and reference all secondary sources used
throughout your module both in text and in a reference list at the end of your assignment. This
should be in the Harvard Style.
