Assignment Overview
Students will be required to do a short prototype and card sorting exercise. You will choose a screen interface (a website or a software application) that you think is poorly designed and create a card sort and report the results. The student should create a new screen prototype for what they think it should look like, using any type of digital diagramming tool or approach.
Instructions:
For this assignment you will need to have a minimum of 2 participants for user feedback (preferably with different backgrounds and/or demographics (e.g., age, education background, race).
- Choose any single screen interface (web or software application) that you think needs improvement.
- What interface did you choose?
- Why do you think that it’s poorly designed (write a few sentences)?
- You MUST include a screen shot of the current version.
- Based on the content (menu choices or other options) on the existing current version screen, create a card sorting exercise. Make sure to use a different color font or colored cards and ensure that the text is readable.
- Describe how you performed the card sorting exercise.
- Who would be a typical user of this website – describe the population characteristics? Please make sure that the graphic quality is clear and legible.
- What did you learn from the card sorting?
- Given your thoughts on why the screen interface was bad based on the data from the card sorting exercise:
- Please provide a prototype drawing (using any technical tool), for how you would improve the interface.
- You MUST use arrows to call out the specific features that are improvements, and write a paragraph describing the specific improvements.
