Introduction

Each week, you will reflect on past or current ethical dilemmas. The purpose of this activity is to help you personally engage with the reading and internalize it. Your ethics journal entries will be useful when you develop your personal ethics philosophy in the last week of this class. Identify an ethical situation you have encountered or heard about and relate it to the ethical theories and concepts discussed in the Johnson textbook. Your response should explain the ethical situation, why it is significant, and how it relates to the textbook.

Important:

  • If you do not cite AI assistance, you will receive a zero for the assignment. However, you can revise and resubmit for full credit.
  • Responding to your peers is optional.

Instructions

Read chapters 5 & 6 in the Johnson textbook, Meeting the Ethical Challenges of Leadership: Casting Light or Shadow.

Respond to the following question:

Describe the ethical dilemmas you have encountered either as a leader or as a follower, how they were resolved, how you feel about the outcomes, and what you learned that you can apply to future ethical decisions.

Use the Johnson textbook to help identify examples. As you read, jot down notes of your personal or professional experiences or media stories related to that week’s reading materials. You must reference specifics in the Johnson textbook from chapters 5 & 6.

If you write about any individuals or organizations, do not reveal any identifying information, especially when recounting unethical conduct or actions.

Directions

  1. Use an AI tool to help you brainstorm, organize, and edit your response. The AI will guide you through a series of questions to help develop your ethical situation and its relation to the Johnson textbook. Examples of AI tools you can use are provided at the bottom. Use the prompt provided below to interact with the AI.
  2. AI Assistance Prompt:“I need help with an assignment for my MBA Leadership class. Please do not provide original thoughts. Instead, help me clarify and expand on my ideas. Here’s the assignment question: ‘Describe the ethical dilemmas you have encountered either as a leader or as a follower, how they were resolved, how you feel about the outcomes, and what you learned that you can apply to future ethical decisions.’First, ask me to identify an ethical situation I have encountered or heard about that resonates with me.After I answer, ask me the following follow-up questions one at a time:
    1. Describe in detail the ethical situation, why it is significant, how it was resolved, and how you feel about the outcomes.
    2. Which ethical theories and concepts from the Johnson textbook relate to this situation?
    3. How do these theories and concepts help to understand or resolve the ethical situation?
    4. What did you learn from this situation that you can apply to future ethical decisions, and why is understanding this ethical situation and its theoretical background important for leadership practice?

Once I have answered all the questions, please help me organize my responses into a cohesive post that meets the assignment requirements, ensuring it is clear, professional, and well-structured.”

  3. Post the cohesive result generated after answering the AI’s questions by Day 7 of this week. Your post should clearly communicate the ethical situation, its significance, and its relation to the Johnson textbook. You do not need to respond to your peers but may do so if you wish.
  4. Discussions need to be professional. Please make proper use of capitalization to begin sentences; also, make sure that there are no misspellings, incomplete sentences, or other violations of grammatical rules.
  5. The basic criterion for a discussion post to be considered effective is that your message must be original and intelligible. You must communicate concisely and effectively. In addition, you must meet the weekly requirements for full credit on discussion assignments.
  6. Citing AI in Your Assignment:
    • Include the in-text citation in your post to acknowledge the use of AI assistance.
    • Add the reference list citation at the end of your post.

Here is a suggested format for citing the AI tool:
