Write a 4-5 page reaction paper addressing the following questions generated from the Frontline video “When Kids Get Life.â€
https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/whenkidsgetlife/view/
- Why do you believe the United States has an inflated number of juveniles who have been sentenced to life terms compared to other countries?
- Why do you believe Colorado’s Justice System has become increasingly harsh/punitive over time? Do you believe this “fixed†the juvenile crime problem? Why or why not? Who did the juvenile crime reform appear to have served, or in other words, who appeared to benefit from this reform?
- In the case examples provided in the video (Jacob Ind, Erik Jensen, Nathan Ybanez, and Andy Medina,) describe some issues/instances where these juvenile offenders were also victims, either prior to or subsequent to their involvement in the Criminal Justice System.
- Do you believe it is appropriate for a District Attorney rather than a Judge to make the determination that a minor will be tried as a juvenile or an adult? Do you feel the laws need to be changed to treat juveniles different than adults? How might this affect the victims in the cases?
- Do you consider family members of juvenile offenders victims? Why or why not? – When Kids Get Life.
